Haink Victoria dy ve ny h-inneen aalin as stoamey.. (HENK-vick-TAWR-ee-a-the- VAY-na-hinn-EEN-AAL-in-azz-STAWM-a)
- Victoria became a beautiful, stately girl..('Victoria came to be in-her girl
beautiful and stately..')
A very long time ago, 'ny' here used to be 'in -e' ('in-her'). When 'e' means 'her',
you add 'h' if the following noun starts with a vowel.
..lesh folt fynn as sooillyn gorrym. (lesh-FOLT-FINN-azz-SOOL-yun-GORR-um) - ..with
fair hair and blue eyes.
..goll rish y voir eck..(GORR-ish-a-VAWR-eck) - ..like her mother.. ('..like the mother
at-her..'). Another way of saying this is:
..goll rish e moir..(GORR-ish-a-MAWR) - ..like her mother..(No letter change)
She leighder v'ish..(shay-LA-eed-er-VISH) - She was a lawyer..
..va Amy briaght jee..(va-AIM-ee-BRY-akht-jee) -..Amy was asking (of) her..
Nagh bare lhiat ve gobbraghey hoal ayns Lunnin? (nakh-BARE-l'yatt-vay-GOBB- rakh-a-HAWL-unnss-LUNN-in)
- Wouldn't you prefer to be working over there in London? ('Would not be better
with-you to-be working over-there in London?')
V'eh taitnyssagh dy liooar..(vay-TATT-n'yizz-akh-the-L'YOOR) - It was pleasant enough..
..ceau paart dy hraa..(k'yow-PURT-the-HRAA) -..spending some time..
..lesh cummaltee va coon dy liooar ayns ny aignaghyn oc, kuse jeu. (kesh-KUMM- alt-ee-va-KOON-the-L'YOOR-unnss-na-AHG-n'yakh-un-OCK,
k'yooss-jow) - ..with inhabitants who were narrow enough in their minds, some of
them.
You could say 'nyn aignaghyn' for 'their minds', but this also means 'our minds' and
'your minds'! So, 'ny aignaghyn oc' is preferable.
V'eh orts scapail..(vay-orts-skayp-AYL) - You had to escape..
As shaghney caa..(azz-SHAHN-a-KAA) - And avoiding a chance..
..v'eh erskyn credjal..(vay-er-SKIN-KREDJ-al) - ..it was beyond (above) belief..
Dy dooghyssagh, va Askell jeant bwooiagh dy row Victoria lhiantyn rish Mannin (the-DOOGH-izz-akh,
va-ASK-ell-JINNT-BWEE-akh-the-row-vick-TAWR-ee- a-L'YANT-in-rish-MANN-in) - Naturally,
Askell was pleased ('made glad') that Victoria was sticking to the Isle of Man.
T'eh dree agglagh..(tay-DREE-AGG-lagh) - It's terribly tedious..
..veagh eh gra. (VEE-ukh-a-GRAA) - ..he would be saying..
