Children for the New Manx Class
A few weeks ago Sheshaght ny Paarantyn (SnyP) met with the Department of Education (DoE) and the Head Master of Ballacottier School to finalise plans for the new Manx Gaelic medium class. Following the meeting SnyP and DoE wrote to parents who have expressed an interest in the class explaining how the class will be run next year and asking parents to register their child.
SnyP explained that the Manx class, which is to be run entirely through Manx (initially for reception and year 1 children), would be an integral part of the school, both at Ballacottier and in the future at St Johns, with full access to all facilities and group activities. Whilst at Ballacottier the Manx class will be physically part of the school and in 2002, once the new St John's School is completed the Manx class will occupy the original school building.
On entering the Manx class the children will be assessed, in line with mainstream, through the medium of English. However, subsequent assessments will be adapted to take into account the development of their Manx language skills. Helping children with their homework is an integral part of family life and parents obviously want to feel confident that they can support their children in this area. It is expected that homework will be given following similar practice to that which exists in Scotland and Wales where the children of parents who are not second language speakers, only ever bring home work they are comfortable with.
SnyP arranged a day trip to Glasgow for parents to visit a Scottish Gaelic Medium Unit in mid-June with support from the Manx Heritage Foundation. This was an extremely valuable exercise for parents as seeing a Gaelic Medium class in action provided invaluable help to parents in finding out what is involved.
