New Manx Words from Coonceil ny Gaelgey!

Coonceil ny Gaelgey the Manx translation council has released some of its recent translations and new words. It translated 'The meals on wheels organisation' as 'Yn Cheshaght cour Livrey Lhongaghyn' and 'Lhiegganyn' is to be used for 'versions'. The Council feel that Laksaa is a better spelling than Laksey (Laxey) but both are to be found in the dictionaries.

The Council also felt that 'Manannan' should really be spelt Mannynan. This spelling much better reflects the original pronunciation of our great legendary hero's name. Here are some of the other translations completed by Coonceil ny Gaelgey.

Hop tu naa, Tra la laa!

I don't know what Hop tu naa was like in your part of the Island but in Cregneash and Port St Mary it was in great spirits. There were seven children out on the Hop tu naa in Cregneash and singing as loud as there little voices could manage.

There's no doubt that 'China' (old word for Cregneash) was a place only for the bravest of monsters and bad spirrits on the 31st and Jinnee the Witch and Jinnee the Spinnee were definitely scared off. There were terrible awful faces cut on the turnips and, accepting the influence of the modern age, the children wore scarey clothes and a few had silly masks.

The night itself was calm enough but a little bit wet and we were going no where by the light of the moon! At each house we stopped at there was plenty of money and sweets for the children and as ever it gave the adults a very good opportunity to chat with the neighbours and find out all the skeet.

Above all the children had a really good, exciting time during the day and the night itself - preparing turnips, getting their costumes sorted, out on the streets in the dark and enjoying the company of their friends and community.

Well done everyone who helped with Hop tu naa this year. Quintin Gill MHK and his friends did a great job once again at the town hall in Port St Mary and I've heard a great story from Peel too - where else. Apparently there's been a lot more turnips for sale this year but unfortunately a great big label with Halloween Swedes was stuck on each one. Well the Peel ones have been out with their marker pens to scribble out the offending words and replace them with 'Hop tu naa Turnips'.

There's a wise saying in Manx which says if a custom is not practised then that custom will cry. Well I think that custom was laughing heartily on Hop tu naa!
