Christmas Events
This week I'm letting my friends do most of the work with the column. I've been supplied with information on a vast array of Christmas happenings for you to get to over the next week or so.
White Boys Saturday 21st
Well I'm a bit late really with this but its good to know that the Whiteboys are still terrorising the happy Christmas shoppers. Last Saturday they were out in force on the streets of Peel. I'm afraid 'traa dy liooar' got the better of me organising them south - maybe next year!
Carol Singing Monday 23rd
Maughold Social Club are going carol singing in Maughold on Dec 23 round Glen Mona - starting at Dhoon Church Hall 7 pm.
Hunt the Wren Thursday 26th
Port St Mary Hunt the Wren will be held on 26th December. Starting at 10 am for 10.30 at PSM Golf Pavilion there'll be a Wren Pole Competition sponsored by PSM Commissioners then dancing through the Port, ending up at Bay View Hotel. Contact Quintin Gill MHK for further information.
Hunt the Wren will be happening in St Johns. Musicians, singers and dancers meet 10.30 am prompt in the Arboretum car park. Telephone Helen on 801925 for further details.
There's a regular group who meet for Hunt the Wren, starting at Albany Road, Douglas. Chris Caine will be on mandolin and there's a couple of young violinists and percussionists as well as a full complement of singers/dancers and the wren pole, of course, decorated by the Callow family. They meet around 9.30-10am and go to various homes in the area until midday. Anyone interested in joining them can call Chris on 471615. They do other folk dances too - Chyndaa'n Builley and Eunysagh Vona.
Another group will be out in Douglas on the Hunt the Wren from 10 - 12.30 starting by the Woodbourne on Alexander Road.
There is always a hunt the Wren in Kirk Michael on St Stephen's day usually starting in the Bank car park at around 10-30 am. I'm told Jane Lawrence is not doing dancers now (Keim er Keim) so they might struggle for dancers, so get along to Kirk Michael if you can.
Cammag - Thursday 26th
Cammag for those of you who've never played the game involves two teams belting each other and occasionally a ball with gorse bons, hockey sticks and the like. It seems to have become traditional to do this each year on the fair field in St Johns after Hunt the Wren at or about 2 pm. The Northern Alliance usually substantially beat the Southern Wooses - an embarrassing one sided debacle guaranteed.
Faith Supper - Friday 27th
Caarjyn ny Gaelgey will be having a Manx party at the Manx House in St Johns starting at 7.30 I think. Bring your own food, drink and entertainment.
Illiam Dhone National Commemoration - Thursday 2nd
The National Illiam Dhone commemoration takes place on the 2nd of January and this years speakers will be Paul Rogers (Manx Oration) and Roy Kennaugh (English Oration). The ceremony will take place at Hango Hill at 2:00 pm. A number of pamphlets outlining the life and struggle of Illiam Dhone will be available (free) at the Hill. After this there's a service at Malew Church where Illiam Dhone was buried and a bit of music and drink at the Viking afterwards.
Oie'll Verree - Saturday 4th
There is an Oie'll Verree concert on Saturday 4th January 7-30 pm in Kirk Michael which includes a Manks dialect play and tay after. I think its in the Methodist Hall but if you drive about looking for a hall with loads of cars outside you'll find it soon enough!
Manx Language Service - Sunday 5th
Manx Language Service at Old Ballaugh Church at 3pm. 9 Lessons and Carols and this will be the last Manx service which the Lord Bishop will be attending before his retirement.
