You and Yours and the New Manx Class

A woman from Radio 4's 'You and Yours' programme was in Mann last week to find out about the progress being made in teaching Manx on the Island. Melanie Abbot, a journalist from the BBC, visited the new Manx Medium Class at Ballacottier to find out more about the innovative teaching there.

She spoke to Annie Kissack, Education Officer for Mooinjer Veggey, who told her about the considerable achievements in Manx Medium preschool and primary education. She also spoke to Manx Class teacher, Julie Matthews, who explained how the class works and how successful it appears to be after only two terms. Ms Abbot wanted to know why parents felt it important to send their children to the class and so she spoke to two of the mothers when they came to pick up their children.

One unfortunate remark was heard when she spoke to my young daughter Kitty, a pupil at the Manx class. Ms Abbot asked "Do your Mum and Dad speak any Manx?" Kitty replied after deep though "Well, a little bit!" Thanks a lot Kit.

There is a lot of interest in the Manx Class both on and off the Island. About a fortnight ago there was a piece in the UK Independent about recent developments in Manx teaching, particularly the Manx medium class, and a week or so before STV was over to do a programme about the Manx language.

In the next few months Sheshaght ny Paarantyn and Mooinjer Veggey will be helping the Department of Education promote the class to parents of children who'll be starting school in September. Already parents of three children are fairly sure that their children will be starting next term but there's enough room for up to 10 children if enough parents wish their children to attend. Steady Course for Yn Cheshaght Ghailckagh

The AGM of Yn Cheshaght Ghailckagh was held a week or so ago at Thie ny Gaelgey, St Judes. The meeting heard from Chairman, Chris Sheard of the considerable work of the society over the past year particularly in printing and the production of the new CD-ROM. He also called for Yn Cheshaght Ghailckagh to create a part-time post for a language worker to help with the ever increasing work of the organisation.

The following officers were elected to the main posts of the society: Bernard Caine President, Chris Sheard Chairman, Peddyr Hayhurst Treasurer as Brian Stowell Secretary and the membership of the committee stayed the same as last year. After the meeting there was a chance for a cup of tea and a 'cooish' and it was generally agreed that Yn Cheshaght Ghailckagh looks set to continue its steady progress made in recent years.
