New Manx Cultural Group
for Children Down the North

Three months ago, if you'ld asked me what I'd do with 25 children, I'm sure it would have been an interesting response. Now, I'd tell you they're part of Cloan ny Twoaie.

Cloan ny Twoaie was formed in late April when a parent suggested that something should be set up to teach children traditional Manx folk music. I was asked whether I would like to do it, I agreed, but wondering what I was letting myself in for. Three months later, I'm sure it was the right decision!

There are currently 25 children, aged 3-10 meeting for just one hour a week, yet already they understand basic commands such as; 'listen, stop, sit down, stand' and they always reply to 'are you ready?' in Manx with a very loud 'ta!' that could wake the dead!

Despite the wide age range and ability, I hope that there's something for all of the children. Judging from the noise that erupts from St. Jude's on a Tuesday night, they certainly sound like they're having fun!

The children are a credit to themselves, they have worked really hard. They have learnt 3 new songs in Manx, can perform some Manx dances, many of the older children are very competent instrumentalists and we will be working on getting them to play whilst the rest of the group sing. We have already looked at Fer ny Clein Click and have just begun to work on Illiam Boght and Birlinn Gorree Crovan.

The group had their debut performance at a Margey Souree, held in St. Jude's two weeks ago. With only 10 hours of contact time, the children miraculously produced a 20 minute programme incorporating song, music and dance. They should be very proud of their achievements, I know I certainly am and I know they'll continue to improve and grow. Thanks to Paul, Dawn and Gordon for all their help in rehearsals, and to Paul, Adam and David for being honorary members of Cloan ny Twoaie during the performance at the Fayre.

A huge thanks to all the parents for their support and constant encouragement, they have been fantastic in supporting both myself and the children, and have been greatly amused in some of the earlier practices when we were still learning our repertoire! The significance of the input of parents in the encouragement of the children in this venture cannot be underestimated, clearly illustrated by the group Sheshaght ny Paarantyn.

Finally - thank you Cloan ny Twoaie, you're all YINDYSSAGH!! If you'ld like to see Cloan ny Twoaie perform, their next performance is at a Friends Of St. Jude's Tea Party on Sunday 16th August. Contact me for further details on 880698!
