Manx for Beginners!
Mini Festival Repeated at Cregneash
A series of music, singing, dancing and Manx language workshops will be taking place at Cregneash on Saturday 24, Sunday 25 and Monday 26 August, together with displays of Manx music and dancing, a Manx language exhibition and children's activities. There will also be demonstrations of a wide range of Manx traditional rural crafts including thatching and horse work.
This weekend provides complete beginners, Manx residents and visitors alike, with the opportunity to see and learn traditional dances, to hear and sing Manx songs and to learn and speak a few words of Manx Gaelic. There will also be opportunities for people with some knowledge of Manx language, music and song to learn some more. There will also be information sheets about the Manx language organisations and where to go to learn the language.
The days' activities will be structured to allow people to have a go at many different aspects of traditional Manx culture. The programme for the weekend is as follows:
1. Beginners sessions aimed at giving 10 - 15 minutes of Manx to the absolute beginner.
2. Singing and children's rhymes workshops - 10.30, 11.30 and 12.30.
3. Whistle workshops - for beginners and more advanced students - 10.30, 11.30 and 12.30.
4. Dance workshops will take place in Church Farm Barn - 10.35, 11.35 and 12.35.
5. Music and Dance displays from 1.30 to 4.00 outside Harry Kelly's cottage.
Cregneash was perhaps the last home of Manx Gaelic, with Manx having survived as the language of the community into the 1930's. It is appropriate that Cregneash is being used as the venue for this festival to promote and develop a secure future for the Manx language and culture.
The Cruinnaght Chreneash has been organised by Yn Cheshaght Ghailckagh and is presented by Manx National Heritage in association with the Manx Heritage Foundation and the Isle of Man Arts Council. For more information contact Phil Gawne at [email protected] or on 834844.
