Mooinjer Veggey, the Manx playgroup, is holding its first Summer Fair from 2 pm - 4.30 pm on Saturday, 28th, June, at Braddan School House next to Braddan School. An admission charge of £1.00 for adults, 50p for children and family ticket £2.00 includes entry into the prize draw!
Feailley Vooinjer Veggey will be opened by Mr Bernard Caine President of Yn Cheshaght Ghailckagh, and then the Onchan Silver Band and Perree Bane will provide music and entertainment for the rest of the afternoon. There will be lots of exciting games and competitions stalls and refreshments. Fun for all the family !
The Language of the Future
I’m not speaking about Manx this time, but Jerriais, that’s the mother tongue of Jersey. Senator Jean Le Maistre, a member of the Jersey Government is very keen that Jerriais should be taught to children in the Jersey primary schools. In an article in last November’s Jersey Post, Senator Le Maistre said he was very encouraged by the resourgence of minority languages throughout Europe, especially the Isle of Man. Jerriais (or Jersey Norman French as it is also called) helped to form the heritage and culture of Jersey, and to avoid the language is to avoid the uniqueness of Jersey, he said.
Jerriais is in a similar position to Manx. There are still some native speakers, but the younger Jersey people do not speak it. Consequently, when the Jersey Government heard how well the Manx Department of Education had done in establishing Manx courses in the schools, it agreed to do the same thing with its own language.
Mr Doug Gibaut, Primary School Adviser to the Jersey Government’s Department of Education, came to the Isle of Man about a week ago to investigate how Manx is being taught. He was keen to find out the problems and difficulties which could be encountered when establishing the like of the Manx course in the schools.
Mr Gibaut visited Mooinjer Veggey at Braddan School House, Braddan School where he spoke to the Head Mistress, Mrs Loaring, and Castle Rushen High School where he spoke to the Head Master, Mr Tavener. The Manx Officer, Phil Kelly accompanied Mr Gibaut, and told him more about the implementation of the Manx course. Mr Gibaut was interested to hear the views of Manx speakers and so he spoke to Fiona McArdle, Manx National Heritage’s Education Officer and Chairman of Yn Cheshaght Ghailckagh, Brian Stowell, Secretary of Yn Cheshaght Ghailckagh, and Phil Gawne, Chairman of Mooinjer Veggey.
Mr Gibaut was impressed with the Isle of Man and the way our language is being taught here. We all hope that in the years to come Jerriais will be heard in the playgroups throughout Jersey just as Manx will be in the Isle of Man.
