Feailley Ghaelgagh - 22nd - 29th, November

This year’s festival programme is almost complete now, however, final details will be in the press a week or two before the festival. Probably there will be some alterations to the provisional programme, however, the following paragraphs give an idea of what is planned so far.

There will be a stall in Douglas, from which information about the festival, the language, Mooinjer Veggey and the like can be obtained. There will be an evening of song at the Whitehouse, Peel. There will be a chance to speak about important matters for Manx at the Gaelic Forum including the need for a Gaelic unit in a primary school, and the possibility of establishing an official Manx Language Board. Brian Stowell will give the first Leaght y Ghaaue - a lecture given in Manx only.

Roy Peadarson will give this year’s Ned Maddrell lecture, at the Manx Museum, and he will speak about Gaelic - An Economic Driver. There will be another chance for people to visit the Manx playgroup, Mooinjer Veggey, at Braddan School House, for a ‘skeet’, a chat and a cup of tea. Thee will be a musical evening at the Viking Hotel in Castletown, a concert of Gaelic music at the Manx Museum, a ‘Food and Folk’ session at the Station, Port St Mary and a grand ceili to finish the week.

Many organisations have agreed to help with this year’s festival, including Manx National Heritage, the Manx Heritage Foundation, the Isle of Man Arts Council and Conister Trust plc. Visiting singers and musician’s from Scotland and Ireland will attend the festival - more about this later.

The ‘Kione y Sker’ Award.

Conister Trust plc have agreed to fund an annual award, ‘the ‘Kione y Sker’ Award’, which is presented to someone who has made a significant contribution to the revival of Manx Gaelic. The President, Chairman, Treasurer and Secretary of Yn Cheshaght Ghailckagh will choose this year’s winner from the nominations they receive.

New Prizes for the Use of Manx.

There will be two new prizes award by Yn Cheshaght Ghailckagh during this year’s Feailley Ghaelgagh. One prize will be given to a public body or employee (a Department, Division, Committee, Commissioners, or Government employee), who/which has used Manx during the year in a significant and conspicuous way, and a similar prize will be presented to a private organisation, company or individual who again has used Manx during the year in a significant and conspicuous way.

Once again a sub committee of Yn Cheshaght Ghailckagh will choose the winners. If you can think of a suitable winner for either or both awards, please let Brian Stowell know at the above address. Again it is important to let him know before the 24th, October.
