FOCKLE AYNS DTY CHLEAYSH

Top Irish Singer for Feailley Ghaelgagh

One of Ireland's best traditional Gaelic singers, Lillis O Laoire, will be performing at this year's Manx Gaelic Festival. He will be performing at the Manx Museum on Friday 27th November at 8pm (admission free) and again on Saturday 28th November at a ceili at the Glen Helen 8pm (admission £4.00 - phone 834844 for tickets). Mr O Laoire will also be running a workshop on traditional singing on Saturday afternoon (contact Phil Gawne on 834844 for more details).

Lillis O Laoire was born in the Donegal Gaeltacht in 1961. He was educated there and subsequently completed his MA in Irish in 1985. He is now a lecturer in Irish in the Department of Languages and Cultural Studies at the University of Limerick.

He became interested in folklore and song from an early age, and he became more actively involved in the traditions of Donegal during his time in Galway. He has lectured, broadcast and performed at home and abroad and has also been engaged in collecting and publishing the song traditions of the north western region, particularly of Tory Island.

The topic of his Ph D dissertation concerns the dynamics of transmission and performance of song in Tory Island, an Irish-speaking community off the Donegal Coast. Twice winner of Corn Ui Riada, he is also director of Ionad na nAmhran, a centre for the study and performance of traditional song in Ireland, at the Irish World Music Centre, University of Limerick.
