'The Light House' - Best Present You'll Open This Christmas

This afternoon I was given a new cassette of contemporary Manx music called the 'Light House'. For sure this must be the best Christmas box you'll open on Christmas morning.

Before I write any further, I must confess that I sing for Caarjyn Cooidjagh - one of the groups featured on the tape - so perhaps my views on this tape are slightly biased. However, even if you ignore the three 'extremely well performed' songs which Caarjyn Cooidjagh have contributed to this tape, I have to say that the 'Light House' contains some fantastic music..

There is music from King Chiaullee, Sheean Raah, Peddyr Cubberley, Katie Lawrence, Moot, and Caarjyn Cooidjagh on this new cassette. They all put there own innovative interpretations on traditional music and new songs and tunes. I am really impressed by the fresh and lively approach taken by all the groups in their music.

King Chiaullee especially play musical tricks on the listener, and as an enthusiast of all things Manx, it gives me great heart to think that the members of this group are all in their teens! King Chiaullee did the music for the video which the Department of Education produced a year or two ago for the Teisht Chadjin Ghaelgagh (GCSE equivalent in Manx). At the time that video was released I thought this group showed tremendous potential. Well, great things were promised and that promise has not been broken!

Another young group which appears on the 'Light House' is Sheean Raah and two members of this group, Peddyr Cubberley and Katie Lawrence, also give solo performances. Again their music is very creative and well played. Sheean Raah gives a tight performance and its music is beautifully seductive.

Where on earth did Moot appear from? If you didn't get to the Cruinnaght competitions this year, you'll never have heard Manx music quite like this. The traditional old Manx songs which this group performs have been given a style which is very brave and adventurous (traditionalists be warned) and even though the rest of the music in the 'Light House is very good indeed Moot's music is out of this world - undoubtedly my favourite tracks on this very agreeable production.

The 'Light House has been 'built' by Charles Guard and published by the Manx Heritage Foundation. You can buy it in the shops now for £7.99 and its worth every penny!
