AITHNE na nGAEL (Gaelic identities)

Last weekend Philip Gawne and Anne Kissack went to a conference in Belfast about Gaelic identities. Gordon McCoy, Cross-community Officer of Ultach Trust organised this conference, and he was delighted that some Manx speakers were able to come.

At first Mr McCoy wrote that participants at the conference would explore the complex relationship between the two Gaelic worlds - Scotland and Ireland. When he heard that Manx people were coming he was ashamed that he had forgotten to include the third Gaelic world - Mannin! So he arranged for Phil Gawne to speak a bit about Manx Gaelic and to participate in other aspects of the conference.

The apparent aim of the conference was to educate and inform Irish speakers about Scottish Gaelic, and about eight speakers gave very interesting talks on this. Kenneth MacKinnon spoke about ‘prospects for Gaelic maintenance in a globalising English world; Tormod Caimbeul spoke about ‘the politics of the Gaelic language movement in Scotland’; and the title of a talk by Peadar Morgan was ‘the Gael is dead; long live the Gaelic.’

After a very interesting and informative day, a concert of Gaelic singing was held. Màiri Nic a’ Ghobhainn, Pádraigín Ní Uallacháin, as Máire Ní Anrachaín sung for us and very good they were too.

The clear message of the conference was that all the gaels must work together more often if we are to be successful.

International Celtic Congress
