Manx Gaelic In Europe Bird Project

Over the last few months Paul Helps and I have been busy producing a new list of Manx bird names. Paul began this work a little while back and to begin with he intended to revise the book on Manx bird names by Doug Fargher. This work was proceeding well but after a while Paul realised that there was a lot more work to do than just correcting an odd word or two.

Paul gathered together all the bird names he could find using the dictionaries of Doug Fargher and Phil Kelly, the Manx bird books by Cullen & Jennings and Cullen & Slinn and the first book of the series "The Manx Have A Word For It" by Doug Fargher.

All these names have been typed in to Paul's computer now and two lists have been produced one following the species names and the other following the English names. Paul received a lot of help from Robert Prys-Jones from the Natural History Museum particularly with revising the scientific nomenclature and preparing the notes.

Paul gave me a copy of his work when he'd finished and it is a tremendous job he's done. He asked me to help resolve some of the problems which he'd found and to remove names which were clearly inaccurate.

At the same time as this I got a message from Davyth Fear (some of us remember him from the Celtic League) who was looking for a list of Manx bird names. An unlikely coincidence! So I went to work on Paul's list getting rid of the obvious mistakes and picking one name (the first name which appeared in Doug's dictionary for the most part) for each bird as Davyth had asked, and I sent him the finished list by E-mail a few weeks ago.

Davyth Fear had been coordinating the acquisition of lists for all the Celtic bird names for someone in Holland called Ruurd Jorritsma who is compiling a book on European birds and wants to include as many European languages as he can. Davyth gave me lists of names in Scots Gaelic and Irish and using these I have come up with some new names for birds which we did not have a Manx word for. However, there are still many European bird which we do not have a name for.

I'll let you know when this book is printed but for the time being the list is available on the internet (Phil Kelly's pages), from Paul Helps or from me. There's still plenty of work to do on Manx bird names but I think we've made a good start.

A Pronouncing Day School

A day at which we can learn how to best pronounce Manx words is to be held at Thie ny Gaelgey, on the 10th of February from about 9.30 - 4.30. This has been organised by Phil Kelly, the Department of Education's Language Officer, and Juan Crellin and Leslie Quirk will guide us towards better pronunciation.
