Mann missing out on exciting cultural developments

During her high profile visit to Scotland in 1997, the then Irish President, Mary Robinson, called for the creation of “an island space” where we can come together to share what Scotland and Ireland share. This lead to the establishment of the Columba Initiative aimed at fostering, developing and enhancing links between the communities of the Irish Republic, Northern Ireland and Scotland, using in particular the common heritage of the Gaelic and Gaeilge language which holds the key to a potentially more integrated sense of an emerging “Greater Gàidhealtachd”.

An approach has been made by yn Greinneyder to see if the Isle of Man can become part of the Columba Initiative and it is hoped that positive news will be received about this in the near future. In the meantime the youth of the Isle of Man will miss out on an exciting new cultural and political Gaelic based initiative.

In a matter of weeks on Monday 22 March, Scottish Project Officer, Domhnall Angaidh MacLennan will launch, in conjunction with Skye’s Gaelic college Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, a flagship week of events which will become the template for a future annual event which will rotate within Éire, Northern Ireland and Scotland.

The core of this week’s highly imaginative programme will be the meeting of the first Youth Parliament of Ireland and Scotland, where young students from the three areas will come together to explore issues common to their communities and hopefully through this, open the way to a greater understanding of our needs. The Parliament will meet at Arainn Chaluim Chille, the College’s new St. Columba Campus, which will be officially opened on the same day by UK Secretary of State for Scotland, Donald Dewar, who will convene the Youth Parliament which significantly and symbolically precedes the formation of The Council of the Isles.

Each day, the Parliament will meet to debate issues following a presentation by expert practitioners in key areas of the Arts, Education, Language, Community Development and other important areas affecting the future of our communities.

Along with the Parliament’s formal structure and purpose will run a wide range of related activities celebrating the common bond of our culture. Young musicians from Ireland and Scotland will come together during the week and an exhibition of the work of internationally prominent artists working in the visual arts has also been commissioned.

The week will also see the launch of a new album “An Island Space”, featuring tracks from musicians from Scotland, Ireland and Cape Breton, to celebrate the opening of the Centre and the work of the Initiative. The proceeds from the album, which will feature tracks from Mary Black, Simple Minds, Marie Brennan (Clannad), Runrig, Capercaille and many other prominent musicians who have all donated tracks, will go towards setting up a dedicated fund within the Charitable Trust to enable young writers and musicians from Scotland and Ireland to come together in the future.

The week’s events will culminate with the arrival of the Celtic Film Festival, celebrating the best work in film throughout the Celtic Countries.

This is the first of what will be an annual event which, with its focus on young people, sets its sights on a future which seeks to build on the bond of the strength of a common Gaelic heritage. Hopefully next year the Isle of Man will be part of this important new development.
