THE FUTURE OF THE MANX LANGUAGE!

About a week ago four young children received certificates of merit which confirmed that they had made excellent progress in the Manx language at Mooinjer Veggey. Sarah Edwards, Rae Hynes, Illiam McCartney and Mick Wrench were presented with their certificates by Mnr Loayreyder(Mr Speaker), Noel Cringle SHK, the chairman of the Manx Heritage Foundation. The presentation was held at the Mooinjer Veggey playgroup at the Old School House next to Braddan School.

Attending the presentation were parents and Mooinjer Veggey committee members. Chairman of Mooinjer Veggey, Phil Gawne, thanked on behalf of the committee everyone who helps with Mooinjer Veggey, in particular the children, group leader and helpers. "These children are the future of our Gaelic tongue and it warms our hearts to see their success and progress with the language. We all hope that these children will now go on to Gael-Scoill (a half day/week Manx course conducted through Manx at Ballacottier, and taught by the Department of Education's Manx language team) next term and that they will continue their interest in Manx."

Mr Cringle was delighted to see the work of Mooinjer Veggey and was pleased to present the certificates. The Manx Heritage Foundation has been generous in its support of Mooinjer Veggey through grants and the work of yn Greinneyder (Manx Language Development Officer) and is very supportive of the aims and aspirations of Mooinjer Veggey.

Since the Braddan group was set up, nearly three years ago, more than forty children have attended the group. Most of the children who have left Mooinjer Veggey have gone on to attend the Gael-Scoill at Ballacottier and there are now six year groups of children attending Gaelic-medium sessions.

Mooinjer Veggey's playgroup leader, Cathy Clucas, is overwhelmed with the success of the Braddan group. "This is the best time to be teaching children Manx or indeed any language. Research into the teaching of minority languages shows that children up to about eight years old are particularly adept at picking up a second or third language, and this is clearly shown at Mooinjer Veggey. The children have no problem with adapting to play, stories and songs in Manx."

There are still a few spaces left at Braddan for this coming term. Speak to Cathy on 835778 or Helen on 801925 for more information.

FRIENDS OF MOOINJER VEGGEY

On the same day Caarjyn Vooinjer Veggey (the Friend's of Mooinjer Veggey) was launched. Since it was formed in 1996 Mooinjer Veggey has been successfully promoting Manx Gaelic and working specifically to establish a network of Manx Gaelic pre-school groups throughout the Island.

Secretary of Mooinjer Veggey, Helen Robinson was pleased to announce the initiative. "Mooinjer Veggey strongly believes that the opportunities provided at its thriving Braddan playgroup should be available to all children in the Isle of Man. However, unless Mooinjer Veggey can spend more money on promotion, staff training and production of resources it can not expand to meet even existing demand."

"For just £10 a year you or your friends can join Caarjyn Vooinjer Veggey and help to support the important work of Mooinjer Veggey. Please send your name and address together with £10 to me, Helen Robinson, Scrudeyr, 5 Pretoria Terrace, St Johns."

Manx Night

A Manx speaking night is to be held at the Viking, Castletown, on Thursday 5th August at or soon after nine o'clock. This will give an opportunity for Manx speakers and learners to use their Manx.
