CRUINNAGHT CHREGNEASH

As part of Manx National Heritage’s Harvest Weekend which is to be held at Church Farm Barn, Cregneash, a series of talks and workshops on Manx Language, Culture and Identity will be held on Saturday 28th, Sunday 29th and Bank holiday Monday 30th of August. It is hoped that the talks, which are listed below, will help bring a greater understanding of traditional Manx culture and its place in our time.

Saturday 28th August

1.00 pm - Aspects of Manx place names by George Broderick
2.00 pm - Animals found in Manx place names by Phil Kelly
3.00 pm - Manx Gaelic - reminiscences by Juan Crellin
4.00 pm - Manx Gaelic - reminiscences by Leslie Quirk

Sunday 29th August

1.00 pm - Manx Gaelic - reminiscences by Brian Stowell
2.00 pm - Making and playing the uillin pipes by Colin Jerry
3.00 pm - The early years of Yn Cheshaght Ghailckagh by Fiona McArdle
4.00 pm - Aspects of Manx Folklore by Bernard Caine

Monday 30th August

1.00 pm - Manxness and its Celtic credentials by Phil Gawne
2.00 pm - ‘The devil once a fiddler made’ by Fenella Bazin
3.00 pm - Sitting at the hub: still the wheel turns by Breesha Maddrell
4.00 pm - Language as a metaphor for identity by Jennifer Kewley Draskau

The talks are expected to last about 30 - 40 minutes each after which questions and discussion will be welcome.

There will be many other activities including extra farming and craft demonstrations as well as the MNH presentation of the Cregneash story. If the weather and crops are right there will be some harvesting activities including cutting oats and threshing barley. There will be demonstrations of spinning, weaving, wool dyeing, knitting, patch working, gardening and cooking, as well as horse work, wall and hedge building and suggane twisting.

Everyone is welcome to come along and discover the culture, traditions and way of life of the people who made Cregneash!
