Lessoon Shiaght-Jeig: Laghyn Seyrey
Lesson Seventeen: Holidays
shiaght-jeig (SHAKH-jegg) - 17
laghyn seyrey (LAA-an-SUR-ra) - holidays ('free days')
To talk about holidays, we need words for some more countries and words concerned
with time:
Y Rank (a-RANK) - France
Y Spaainey (a-SPAAN-ya) - Spain
nurree (NURR-ee) - last year
myleeaney (MLEE-an-a) - this year
To talk about the past:
va shin (VASH-in) - we were
cha row shin (ha-ROW-shin) - we weren't
row shiu? (ROW-shoo) - were you?
Row shiu ayns y Rank? (ROW-shoo-unnss-a-RANK) - Were you in France?
Va (vaa) - Yes.
Cha row (ha-ROW) - No.
Remember there are no direct words in Manx for 'yes' and 'no'. The answer to the question
'Row shiu ayns y Rank?' is either 'Va' or 'Cha row': here, you can think of 'Va'
as being short for 'We were' and 'Cha row' as being short for 'We were not'.
Talking about the future:
beemayd (B'YIMM-udj) - we'll be
cha beemayd (ha-B'YIMM-udj) - we won't be
bee shiu? (BEE-shoo) - will you be?
