Lessoon Hoght-Jeig: Meeghyn

Lesson Eighteen: Months

hoght-jeig (HAWKH-jegg) - 18

mee (mee) - month
meeghyn (MEE-un) - months

The Manx months are based on the seasons:

yn Arragh (a-N'YARR-akh) - the Spring
	y Sourey (a-SOW-ra) - the Summer
	y Fouyr (a-FOWR) - the Autumn
	y Geurey (a-G'YOW-ra) - the Winter

The 'ow' sounds here rhyme with 'how'.

To understand the names of the months, you need to know these words:

jerrey (JERR-a) - end
toshiaght (TOZH-akht) - beginning
mean (mayn) - middle

You might think the seasons in the Manx calendar are a bit premature!
Notice that the words for the seasons change from their basic form - 'geuree' means
'of winter', and so on:-

Jerrey-geuree (JERR-a-G'YOW-ree) - January
Toshiaght-arree (TOZH-akht-ARR-ee) - February
Mayrnt (marnt) - March
Averil (AA-va-ril) - April
Boaldyn (BAWL-din) - May
Mean-souree (mayn-SOW-ree) - June
Jerrey-souree (JERR-a-SOW-ree) - July
Luanistyn (LOON-iss-tin) - August
Mean-fouyir (mayn-FOWR) - September
Jerrey-fouyir (JERR-a-FOWR) - October
Mee Houney (mee-HOW-na) - November
Mee ny Nollick (MEE-na-NULL-ick) - December
