Lessoon Jees as Daeed: Kiartaghyn
Lesson Forty-Two: Jobs

jees as daeed (JEESS-azz-DY-eed) - forty-two ('two and forty')

In English, if we want to talk about more than one thing, we generally add the letter 's' - 'job', 'jobs'. But there are exceptions: 'man', 'men', for instance.
In Manx, as in many other languages, the ways to make plurals are more varied than in English. Here are some examples:

kiartey (K'YART-a) - a job
kiartaghyn (K'YART-akh-un) - jobs

Manninagh (MANN-in-akh) - a Manx person
Manninee (MANN-in-ee) - Manx people

roar (rawr) - a bike
roaryn (RAW-run) - bikes

The commonest way to make a plural is to add '-yn'.

Conversation

Catreeney: By vie lesh Breeshey ve ny slaader.
Ealish: Slaader? Jannoo jallooyn?
Catreeney: Cha nee - slaa thieyn.
Ealish: Nagh by vie lhee ve ny ben-lhee?
Catreeney: Cha by vie lhee. S'mie lhee slaadaah.

by vie lesh Breeshey (ba-VY-lesh-BREEZH-a) - Brigid would like
ve (vay) - to be
slaader (SLAAD-er) - painter, decorator
jallooyn (JOLL-oo-un) - pictures
cha nee (ha-N'YAY) - 'no'
slaa (slaa) - painting, smearing
lhee (l'yee) - with her
nagh by vie lhee...? (NAKH-ba-VY-l'yee..) - wouldn't she like...?
ben-lhee (ben-l'yee) - doctor (woman)
Cha by vie lhee (ha-ba-VY-l'yee) - She wouldn't like ('No').
slaadaah (SLAA-daa) - painting

Remember that if you like something, it is 'good with' you.

Catreeney makes it clear that Breeshey would not like to be a doctor by saying
'Cha by vie lhee' ('Would not be good with her').
