Manx for ‘thief’ is ‘maarliagh’ (MERL-yakh). Like lots of nouns ending in ‘-agh’, the plural ends in ‘ee’: ‘maarlee’ - ‘thieves’. Literally, ‘maarlee-oie’ means ‘night-thieves’.

dy ghow ... ymmyd (the-GHOW...IMM-ud) - that ... used
ny meoiryn-shee (na-MERR-un-SHEE) - the police

One way of expressing ‘using’ is to say ‘goaill ymmyd jeh’ (goyl-IMM-ud-jay) - ‘taking use of’. In the past tense, we can say ‘ghow’:
‘ghow ny meoiryn-shee Manninagh ymmyd jeh...’ (GHOW-na-MEER-un-SHEE-MANN-in-akh-IMM-ud-jay) - ‘the Manx police used...’
Alternatively, Ean could have said:
‘Ren oo fakin dy ren ny meoiryn-shee Manninagh ymmyd jeh....?’
