Co-loayrtys

Catreeney: Vel oo smooinaghtyn dy lhisagh ny aundyryn ve cho mooar sy chronghyr
Goaldagh? T’ad mooar agglagh.
Ealish: T’ad gra dy vel shen greinnaghey sleih dy chionnaghey tiggadyn.
Catreeney: Er lhiam dy noddagh aundyr feer vooar stroie peiagh ennagh.

smooinaghtyn (SMUNN-yakht-in) - thinking

Remember that Manx has one form for the present tense of verbs.
‘Vel oo smooinaghtyn?’ means ‘Do you think?’ and ‘Are you thinking?’

lhisagh (L’YITH-akh) - ought; should
cho (ho) - so
t’ad (tadd) - they are
agglagh (AGG-lakh) - awful, frightful

‘agglagh’ is used with adjectives to give stress: ‘mooar agglagh’ -
‘extremely large’ (‘frightfully large’). Alternatively, we can put ‘braew’ in front of the adjective: ‘braew mooar’.

greinnaghey (GRENN-yakh-a) - encouraging
sleih (sly) - people
er lhiam (err-L’YAMM) - I think
dy noddagh (the-NOTH-akh) - that ... could
stroie (stry) - destroy
peiagh ennagh (PY-akh-enn-YAKH) - someone
cha s’ayms (ha-SIMM-uss) - I don’t know
mie ny sie (MY-na-SY) - say ‘sigh’ - good or bad

Note how ‘that’ crops up in the conversation above:

Vel oo smooinaghtyn dy lhisagh ny aundyryn ve cho mooar? - Do you think that the prizes should be so large?

T’ad gra dy vel shen greinnaghey sleih dy chionnaghey tiggadyn - They say that that encourages people to buy tickets.
Er lhiam dy noddagh aundyr feer vooar stroie peiagh ennagh - I think that a very big prize could destroy someone.

As pointed out in Lesson 108, we don’t always need ‘if’ in Manx:
Cha s’ayms vel eh mie ny sie - I don’t know if it’s good or bad.
