The Manx words for (North, South East West) are (Hwoaie, Yiass, Har, Heear). Unlike English the important ones are East and West. The words for these come from (ar) meaning front and (eear) meaning back, when facing the rising sun.

As with up and down there are different ways of using these points of the compass in different situations.

To talk about
the
N, S, E & W we use the following :-

Yn Shiar / Niar - The East Yn Sheear / Neear - The West
Yn Twoaie - The North Yn Jiass - The South

Ta shin ayns y jiass - We are in the south
Va mee goll my yiass - I was going southwards
Haink Ned veih'n jiass - Ned came from the south
V'eh er y cheu yiass jeh y valley - It was on the south side of the town
Ta'n Spaainey my yiass jeh'n Rank - Spain lies south of France

Because East and West are more important in Manx NE NW SE and SW are :-

Nair hwoaie - NE Neear hwoaie - NW
Niar ass - SE Neear ass - SW

To describe something (e.g. a wind)

Y Gheay hwoaie - The north wind Y gheay yiass - The south wind
Y gheay niar - The east wind Y gheay neear - The west wind

When you are moving 'to the east' you can say this in several ways e.g.
gys y shiar, lesh y shiar, gour y shiar.

V'eh goll gys y shiar - He was going to the east
T'ee shooyl lesh y twoaie - She is walking to the north
Neemayd roie gour y sheear - We will run to the west
