Say it with FORCE
You will often hear people speaking Manx with force or emphasis. So much so that according
to a scholar who has been listening to the recordings made of the last native speakers,
they seemed to use little else. However for us, let us stick to using the Emphatic way of speaking only when we need it.
Normal Emphatic
mee - mish
oo, ou - uss
eh - eshyn
ee - ish
shin - shinyn (pronounced shingyn)
shiu - shiuish
ad - adsyn
The emphatic ways of saying me, you, him etc. are simply used in place of the normal
ones. They are frequently used to add weight to a reference to a particular person
or to round off a sentence with an otherwise weak ending. It is also frequently found
in sentences with the word 'she' meaning 'It is'.
S'beg lhiam eshyn. - I hate HIM.
Cha row uss ayns shen. - YOU were not there.
She mish t'ayn - It is ME (that is in.)
Another occasion where the emphatic can be used is to add clarity where two '
eh
' or '
ee
' would otherwise come together. e.g.
Honnick eh eh. - Honnick eh eshyn. - He saw it(m).
Cheayll ee ee - Cheayll ee ish - She heard her.
As well as having emphatic ways of saying me, you, him, her etc. the same idea can
often be applied to the groups of prepositional pronouns (a prepositional pronoun
is something like - at me, with him, in it, on you, etc.) e.g. aym, lhiam, oc. With
slight variations in spelling, the general rule is you add the following to the normal version.
Me -
s
You(s) -
s
He -
'syn
She -
ish
We -
yn
You(p) -
ish
They -
'syn
S'mie lhiams shen. - I LIKE that lhiam -> lhiams
Row ish mayrts? - Was SHE WITH YOU? mayrt -> mayrts
Vel shoh y kayt echeysyn? - Is this HIS cat? echey -echeysyn
Yn thie euish as ayms - YOUR house and MINE. eu -> euish
Vel shen y thie ocsyn? - Is that THEIR house? oc -> ocsyn
Most of the above examples are in general use and will sound impressive when brought
into conversation (in the right place). However the use of the normal form is never
wrong so just use the emphatic where it feels natural.
Focklyn Noa
ny dyn - or not roosteyr - robber
cochaslys - photograph caillt - lost
fy yerrey hoal - at long last doont - closed
