Should and Meet

Should

To say you should, or ought to do something use the verb
Lhisagh
as follows.

Lhisin - I ought Lhisagh oo - You ought Lhisagh shin - We ought

e.g.
Lhisin goll thie nish - I should go home now
Lhisagh ee ve maynrey - She ought to be happy

Another way to say this is to use S'cair (da). Literally ''Tis right to' as follows.

S'cair dou goll dy valley nish - I ought to go home now.
S'cair jee ve maynrey. - She ought to be happy.
By chair da er n'yannoo eh - He ought to have done it.

Don't worry about the last example, it is rarely heard in conversation. It is included purely to show the exciting past tense of
She
in a sensible example.

Meet

When you meet someone in Manx you are said to
come on their meeting
(cheet quail). This works as follows.

Haink mee ny whail Juan - I met Juan
Haink mee ny quail Moirrey - I met Mary
Higgym ny whail dooinney - I will meet a man
Higmayd ny quail ben - We will meet a woman
Higgym nyn guail - I will meet them
Ta mee er jeet nyn guail - I have met them
Haink mee dty whail - I met you
Haink eh my whail - He met me

To try to make sense of the above, use the appropriate tense of
cheet
followed by the person who is doing the meeting. Follow this by (my, dty, ny, nyn), picking the appropriate one for the person who is being met. Finally the word
quail
mutated to
whail
after my, dty, ny (masculine) or
guail
after nyn.

Some people say this is a horrible invention of some recent grammar monger and that early versions of the Bible and other books show it is really far more simple, being in the form of
cheet ny quail
regardless of who is meeting who.

Haink ad ny quail mish - They met me
Higym ny quail ad - I will meet them

You pays your money and you takes your choice. The complicated form is more widely used at the moment.
