Summary of Tenses for Regular Verbs

This lesson tries to bring together in one place the rules about forming any tense of a so called regular verb - Here goes using the example Faagail (to leave). To start with find the root of the verb by removing anything that looks removable from the end e.g.

al, aghey, agh, ail, ey, aghtyn

etc. Endings with

agh

in, are replaced with an

'ee'

Alternatively look in Cregeen's dictionary for the form of the verb marked with an asterisk.

Past

e.g. I left
mutate (lenite) the root and prefix leading vowel with D or J

Daag mee - I left Cha daag mee - I didn't leave
Daag mee? - Did I leave?

Imperative

e.g. Leave (an order) Simply use the root, and add jee on the end when ordering more than 1 person.

Faag - Leave (to one person) Faag jee - Leave (to many people)
Nagh faag - Don't leave

Future

e.g. I will leave. Take the root. Adding -ym,-ee,-mayd to verbs not ending agh. Add -eeym,-ee,-eemayd to those ending agh. Mutate (nasalise) the root for questions and negatives.
