My (part 1)

Some extracts from the dictionary today concerning the Manx word

my meaning before.

Before

We already know how to use Roish and its relations to say before. e.g.

Roish yn aile - Before the fire
Yn vlein roish shen - The year before that
Honnick mee eh roee - I saw it before her
Cha nel mee er n'akin shen roie - I havent seen that before

If we use my followed by the dependent (question) form of a verb we can say different forms of the word before. Note that my is pronounced ma and according to Fargher, should have been spelt that way.

My dooar eh baase - Before he died
My dug oo shen - Before you gave that
My jig oo - Before you come
My voym baase - Before I die

The two words can be used together to reinforce each other

Roish my jagh mee er bashtey - Before I was christened
Roish my jagh ny seihill er croo - Before the world was created

For completeness a final way of saying before (in space). As in facing from the word for mouth, beeal.

Va guilley er my veealloo - The boy was before me
Ta biljyn er beealloo yn thie - Before the house there are trees
