In Manx you can translate
as either
or
. In today's lesson I hope to illustrate the differences and show how
my makes use of the relative form of the verb. Thanks to Adrian
Pilgrim for grammar and examples.
If he was in Strand Street I did not see him -
my v'eh ayns Straid Gheinnee cha naik mee eh
If he were in Strand Street he would see the new shop -
dy beagh eh ayns Straid Gheinnee heeagh eh yn shapp noa
Note that
is used where we are making a factual statement and
is used where we are being hypothetical. For more advice on using
(conditional) see lessons 11 and 54. See below for examples of
(relative).
My v'eh ayns shoh... - If he was here...
My t'eh ayns shen... - If he is there... (present)
My huitt eh... - If he fell...
My vees oc traa dy loayrt... - If they have time to speak...(future)
My veesmayd bio... - If we are alive (future)...
is the particular form of the verb
that is used when you are talking about things in the future following
. It has other uses but this is the most frequently heard. To convert any of them to a negative
is replaced with
(literally my-nagh).
Mannagh vel eh ayns shen... - If he is not there...
Mannagh row ad ayn... - If they were not in...
Mannagh beemayd gennal... - If we won't be merry...
Note that when
is used in the future, it takes the normal future and not the relative
one (beemayd and not veesmayd). Some irregular and all regular verbs have
a relative form.
goll, cheet, cur, gra, jannoo, fakin, feddyn - use normal future tense
goaill - my ghoym, my ghoys oo, my ghoys mayd
clashtyn - my chluinnym, my chluinnys oo, my chluinnys mayd
ve - my veem, my vees oo, my vees mayd
foddym - my oddym, my oddys oo, my oddys mayd
For regular verbs Take the stem, complete with
where appropriate, mutate lenite it. Then add -
to the I form and -
to all others before oo, eh, ee, mayd, shiu, ad. (Note mayd, not shin.)
oltaghey - salute - olteeym, olteeys oo, olteeys mayd
fuirraghtyn - wait - uirreeym, uirreeys oo, uirreeys mayd
prowal - try - phrowym, phrowys oo, phrowys mayd
shooyl - walk - hooillym, hooillys oo, hooillys mayd
chyndaa - turn - hyndaaym, hyndaays oo, hyndaays mayd
bwoalley - hit - woaillym, woaillys oo, woaillys mayd
kiangley - tie - chiangleym, chianglys oo, chianglys mayd
tummey - dive - hummym, hummys oo, hummys mayd
