1. Edward Merryweather came to live in Douglas in 1765.
2. He was the only son of Joshua Merryweather, the famous bishop.
3. Edward was a priest too but he was not famous yet.
4. He bought a house in Fort Street near the quay.
5. During the day he worked at St Matthew's church.
6. At night he walked the streets saving fallen women.
7. In those days there were several fallen women in Douglas.
8. Although their job was dangerous, the money was good -
9. and they did not need to be saved
10. and sent to work in Edward's Workhouse for Fallen Women.
11. In the workhouse women took in sewing and did good work.
12. and at night they were locked in their rooms.
13. The ladies who had not been saved waited on the quay for lusty
men.
14. Edward would walk amongst them
15. He would ask them to change their job.
16. and he would tell them how wonderful life was in his workhouse.
17. After several months of this the fallen women were growing annoyed.
18. Edward was putting off the ladies' customers.
19. He would sing hymns outside the ladies' houses at night.
20. Many times a full chamber pot would fly out of a bedroom window.
21. But Edward was undaunted and he would continue to sing.
22. The next Sunday the ladies planned to take their revenge.
23. They dressed in their best clothes and went to St Matthew's.
24. Whilst Edward was telling his flock a long story from the Bible
25. they rose up from their pew and walked up to the pulpit.
26. They stood about Edward and looked on him adoringly.
27. At first Edward did not notice them but
28. at the end of the Bible story
29. he was surrounded by a host of fallen angels
30. and they were all naked but for their hymn books.
31. There were some large congregations at St Matthew's for the next
week or two.
32. But Edward and his ladies did not return.
33. Edward had left on the next boat to Liverpool to become a monk
34. and the ladies started a brothel called the Nunnery.

1. About thirty years ago people were very worried about World War
III.
2. The government built a secret nuclear shelter in Douglas.
3. There was only room in the shelter for forty-seven people.
4. The people who were not on the list formed a committee.
5. They thought that the government had not been fair
6. so they went to talk with the speaker of the house of keys.
7. Since it was near an election he agreed with them.
8. so the house of keys discussed the matter.
9. They decided to give a grant of 150 to anybody -
10. who was willing to build his own shelter.
11. The people thought that this was wonderful news
12. and in many gardens, large holes appeared.
13. and suddenly, all the builders were very busy.
14. There was a rich man living in Maughold.
15. He built the biggest shelter on the Island.
16. There was room in it for his family and even his car.
17. There was a swimming pool and a bar too.
18. Above the shelter was a small Manx cottage,
19. and they could reach the shelter through a hole in the floor.
20. After many years the world became more peaceful,
21. and the rich man died of old age.
22. His underground palace was forgotten.
23. The cottage was rented by Ron and Ruby Clucas.
24. One day Ruby was cleaning the kitchen and she found the hole.
25. When Ron came home that evening they went down.
26. They found the palace and the swimming pool and the bar.
27. They also found the Rolls Royce.
28. Nobody else knew where the car had come from, but from that day
29. Ron and Ruby were known as the King and Queen of Maughold-
30. and they lived happily ever after in their little cottage.
