1. Not many ships visited the Isle of Man in 1640.
2. This peace gave the mermaids opportunity to visit the shore.
3. They would sit on the beach combing their hair on moonlit nights.
4. When they saw anybody else they would jump in the sea and swim away.
5. They were seen by several people living by the coast.
6. Two men made nets from strong cord and laid them on the beach.
7. They waited out of sight for a mermaid to appear.
8. After several hours a mermaid came and sat down on the net.
9. The men pulled the cords and she was caught.
10. They opened the net and examined their captive.
11. The men had never seen anything more beautiful.
12. Above her waist she was like a complete young woman.
13. but below the waist she was all fish, with fins and a long tail.
14. She was carried to a nearby house and given food and drink.
15. Although the food was good she would not not eat or drink or speak.
16. The men knew she could speak, for they had heard her on the shore.
17. She continued to fast for three days.
18. and she was beginning to look ill.
19. The men feared terrible consequences if she were to die.
20. so on the third night they let her go back to the sea.
21. in the sea she was welcomed by many other merpeople.
22. They asked her what the land people were like.
23. She said they were very ignorant
24. because they throw away the water they have boiled eggs in.
25. Her reply was clearly heard on the shore.
26. But the people on the shore did not understand it at all.
