LESSON 8.

GRAMMAR (for study).

Combinations of verb and preposition are employed in the construction of many phrases and idioms. In the Manx language the great variety and freedom of these combinations amply compensate for what at first sight appears the fewness of its verbs. Following are a few examples:—

goaill rish (acknowledging, confessing).
goaill stiagh (including).
goll fo (sinking, going under).
goll rish (resembling).

loayrt rish (accosting).
gra rish (saying to, telling).
cur ass (extinguishing).

cur da (giving to, striking).
cur lesh (bringing, carrying).
cur jerrey (finishing).
cur-my-per (beholding).
cheet er y hoshiaght (prospering).

jeeaghyn er (looking at).
jeeaghyn da (showing to).
jeeaghyn lesh (looking towards, regarding).
