R10 If in Manx
There are two words in Manx for if, my and dy. We use my if something is possible or likely:
My teh fliugh, scummey - If it is wet, it doesnt matter.
My veh kiart, neem goaill yindys - If he was right, Ill be surprised
My vees eh feayr, beemayd goit - If it is cold, well be stuck (If it will be cold....)
We use dy (with conditional tenses) if something is impossible or very hypothetical:
Dy beagh Ealee ayns shoh, yinnin ginsh jee -If Ealee were here, Id tell her.
Dy jinnagh oo snaue dys America, yinnin cur millioon punt dhyt - If you swam to America, Id give you a million pounds.
The negative for both my and dy is mannagh:
Mannagh vel eh fliugh, beem bwooiagh - If it isnt wet, Ill be glad.
Mannagh row eh kiart, scummey - If he wasnt right, it doesnt matter.
Mannagh vees eh feayr, bee eh feer vie - If it isnt cold, itll be very good.(If it will not be cold, ...)
Mannagh jinnagh oo shen, veign bwooiagh - If you didnt do that, Id be glad.
Note that Dy row ... does NOT mean If ... was/were ...!
Dy row Fenella ayns shoh! - If only Fenella were/was here!
Dy beagh Fenella ayns shoh, veign maynrey - If Fenella were here, Id be glad.
