Variable lenition occurs:
 

(1) In masculine nouns after the article in the genitive singular. 'yn'

(2) In singular nouns of both genders after a preposition plus the article y, yn.

(3) In the second element of a compound.

(4) In a noun after a prefixed adjective.

(5) In verbal nouns after 'er' Originally followed by nasalisation - still in common verbs - but lenition more usual.

(6) In a noun in the genitive singular acting as an adjective after a feminine singular noun in the nominative-accusative.

(7) In the adjective after a noun in the plural, when the plural is formed by vowel change alone.

(8) In the adjective after a noun in the plural, when the plural is formed by changing -agh to -ee
